The Lost Interview
words by Dustin Amato
I had the chance to go for a cruise with the Iceland Iceman, David Bo this past afternoon. In between running around for new job interviews, he stopped by to take some quick photos, show me his new skatepart and gimme a ride over to some local shops. Shortly into the drive he got a phone call from the owner/team manager of Pharmacy boardshop to confirm his current sponsors for an upcoming comp. As he began to list them, “Pharmacy, Mountain Dew, Adidas, Ashbury, Official Genius…” there was pause a short protest insued I really couldn’t hear and then david continued, “no its new brand I want to support, he’s actually with me here right now, hooked me up with some really cool hats.” David went back to listening and then continued listing his sponsors, HEX, and oh yeah Rook brand, definitely put them down. The conversation ran on and short time before, he looked over to me and said maybe we should try them another day. The kid that has put Rook Brand on the map in the skate scene as the only rider they have ever marketed is a constant grinder and true to the underground. When we first talked he was really stoked about supporting the small underground brands in addition to his larger sponsors. “its like, I want to support the brands that support me but also the brands that are just fighting to survive, because I feel like as a skateboarder, I’m always just skating to survive. So I can relate to that level of determination.” After stopping by a few shops, I was able to ask him a few questions.

Whats your #1 goal in skateboarding right now?
To lock down a solid board sponsor, sure I ride pharmacy decks right now and I love them and will always love them, but I feel like without a board sponsor, its cheese dick, its like im only half way there, I’ve had a few come and go but I want something solid a great company that I can just build with.
If you could choose one who would that be right now?
Idk , id like a crew I could click with but still be myself, I could see myself on maybe Birdhouse or Creature, I think I could fit in with birdhouse and Creature would be Rad, I’ve always really like both there stuff. Or maybe a new brand that just understands the core values of skateboarding and isn’t just all about the money.

Where did your drive come from to skate ?
I was laid off work and had a lot of free time and was living around LA, Santa Monica, Hollywood areas, just skateboarding everyday really pushing myself. I linked up with the Pharmacy team and they introduced me to a lot of my sponsors, they linked me up with Mountain Dew and Adidas and im really thankful to have them on my team.
What’s next?
If I could go to a country where they don’t have something and was able to give that something to them, then that’s what I would want to do. I have a big picture imagination so I tend to think that if you believe it, all of a sudden you’re doing it. I want to go out and help people and skating is the outlet that can help me do it. It’s a theory I have that skating is the perfect way for me to get in touch with those people.Shout out all my sponsors, fellow skaters and supportors thanks for believeing in me and keep an eye out for new skating!
Motto: Pay it forward.
